I love the question about who art should comfort/discomfort. It's a great provocation. And certainly, if it can "unsettle the complacent" - which is most of us at some point - then I think that's a good function of art.
Thanks, Jeffrey. I agree, and I think we forget how often we are very much complacent. It’s funny, too, because when I’m creating art, most times I’m just leaning into a feeling of what looks good or fits the mood I’m trying to convey. I’m curious to purposefully sit down and create with the intention to unsettle.
That's an interesting idea. Does one unsettle on purpose, or just let the art do it? When the Futurists and Dadaists tried to do it purposefully, arguably not a lot of good art was produced.
