I try to tackle at least one or two larger works over the summer, but not necessarily deep reads. For instance, for the first few years we had our summer place, I re-read Tolkien’s “Lord of the Rings” each summer. It’s an in-depth read, but not deep.

I like that distinction - in-depth but not deep. Although I can’t do Tolkien 😅 - that did come up on Tuesday. I had a teacher read The Hobbit to us one year and he was so monotone, I think killed any hope of me enjoying it. Falling asleep in the theatre at the first LOTR sealed the deal 😂

That said, what’s on tap this summer?

I picked up a few SciFi/Fantasy books at that cool used book store we visited in Freddy Beach a while back. I’m sure one or more of them will do nicely!

With your tragic history surrounding the topic, falling asleep during LOTR will be a hard hobbit to break…

Ah, the Lancaster Mall! Summer reads always include whatever I want to read and at least one book about summer. Or set during summer. Or involving a summer vacation.

Also yes I would have shamed you for making terrible classification jokes!

Ooh, interesting - a read involving summer. I imagine that the season helps make the read more immersive. Will have to see what a “reads about/involving summer” search yields.

And I would expect nothing less than vigorous mocking re: shoddy classification jokes 🩷

Like the ideal for me, as a tween, was The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants. So I’m (still) always looking for books with that feeling! Carley Fortune does a decent job, as one author with an annual summer book.
